The village of Makry Gialos is about 3km and has an attractive little boulevard, fishing port, tavernas and bars. There are several walking trails nearby, including through valleys and gorges. Historical sites including Knossos and Heraklion are well worth a visit. Also closer to are excavations and the history of the Minoan culture up to Venetian times.
